Little heads to Hickory Speedway fresh off strong Virginia run

SHERRILLS FORD, North Carolina (October 13, 2011)-Jesse Little used patience, a solid set-up and a touch of racing luck to become the youngest driver to ever qualify for the famed Virginia Is For Lovers 300 late model race held last weekend at Martinsville Speedway.

Running as high as ninth from his 40th place starting position, the 14-year old high school freshman rode out a 17th place finish after an incident shortened his afternoon with two laps to go.

Racing luck played a part in Little gaining the final transfer spot last weekend at Martinsville. Having come up one position short of the transfer position, Little later gained the coveted spot through a bit of misfortune that befell the fifth place team.

With over a year of experience in the late models tock cars, Little knows that just about anything can happen good or bad during a race day.

“Racing luck was my best friend last Sunday that’s for sure,” Little said. “We were in the (post race technical inspection) line when the (final transfer) car had engine problems and just like that we were into the race. It was an up and down time for the team but we really didn’t get to think about it to much as we had to get ready to go (for the main event).”

With strong results in hand from Virginia Little’s Leavitt Racing Chassis race team heads to North Carolina’s Hickory Speedway this weekend for the Dwight Huffman Memorial. Having logged more laps on the historic track then any other the team has competed on, Little will use the Martinsville experience to build towards another strong finish, he said.

“Martinsville is the longest race I’ve ever run (over 2.5 hours and 200 laps) which gives me lots of confidence going into Hickory. If the car is there for me like we had set-up in Martinsville we expect to win.”

Being mindful of not getting over confident, Little is looking forward to running a track that he’s had success on in during his budding late model career, he added.

“We have lots of confidence in qualifying and for the race. It’s a tough place and we don’t take any track for granted but I know how to get around there and I have a lot of faith in our set-up and this race team. If we can have some more good racing luck we’ll be there at the end.”

Little and his team are on a stretch of six races over seven weekends. Traveling across the Carolinas and Virginia means some short school days for the high school freshman, something not lost on the third-generation driver.

“It’s been really hard (to miss school),” he said. “I want to keep my grades up because college is important to me. I like school which does help but racing is very time consuming. Luckily I have understanding teachers and as long as I keep my grades up missing a few classes has been ok.”
